Merrivale Sunset - Fine Art Print
The prehistoric site of Merrivale on the west side of the moor includes a spectacular pair of stone rows along the gentle ridge of Longash Common and many other ancient cists, cairns and circles.
I have visited this mysterious place many times, with and without my camera and unlike anywhere else I know on Dartmoor, it connects us with the people of thousands of years ago.
I can imagine people walking along these rows as part of some ritual or ceremony, the meaning of which is still unknown to us.
This photograph was shot the day before new year’s day. My tripod was as low as I could get it to bring the stones above the horizon and I made the exposure just as the setting sun popped out from behind the largest monolith of the north row.
