I am a full time professional commercial photographer based Ivybridge on the southern edge of Dartmoor in South West Devon. I specialise in corporate, business portrait and promotional photography for organisations in South West England. I also like to shoot scenic landscape images of this wonderful area and to tutor photographers of all levels.
I have been passionate about capturing images of the world around me since getting my first camera at the age of 12. Born in Leicestershire and living and working in South Devon since 1991, I enjoy combining my craft of photography with my enjoyment and respect for the inspirational Westcountry environment and its people.
I formally learnt about the art and craft of photography to first class degree level at Plymouth College of Art and have subsequently qualified to associateship level of the British Institute of Professional Photography. Tony Cobley Photography began trading in April 2005, specialising in corporate, commercial and stock landscape photography throughout all areas of Devon & Cornwall – anywhere from the Isles of Scilly to Taunton.
When I am not on a busy commercial shoot, I like to slow down and create photographs of the beautiful and inspirational Devon moorland and coastal landscape. Dartmoor is somewhere which feels like no other place in the UK and where you can experience the feeling of great space, big sky and solitude. Heading into the moor, you are more likely to bump into ponies, sheep and upland cattle than other humans.
Exploring Dartmoor, you find constant reminders and links to the past, from our recent industrial mining and quarrying heritage to mysterious evidence of pre historic civilisations and their ceremonial stones and burial mounds. There is an endless variety of texture, shape, tones and lines – the perfect photographer’s toolbox when combined with ever changing light.
Brining in disciplines from my commercial photography career, I like to find strong subjects within the Dartmoor landscape and to lead the eye into each composition. Gnarly tees, ancient stones, derelict cottages, stone walls, water and animals make up these subjects, helping me to show the character of this special place. I often deploy non-traditional landscape photography techniques from my commercial and even portrait work style.
This collection of photographs, available from “Gifts from Dartmoor” are a variety of my Dartmoor scenes from over the last few years of wandering with my camera. With these images, I aim to show how the uniqueness of Dartmoor affects and inspires me.
